About Southern Lodestar Foundation

Lodestar: a star that is used to guide the course of a ship, especially the pole star

The Southern Lodestar Foundation, founded by André Redinger, is a registered NPO, based in Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

As founder of the Millhouse Group, Redinger established the foundation as a vehicle and platform to connect people, nutrition and food within the African landscape. This with the goal to ensure knowledge and nutritious foods are more accessible to all, for the growing and flourishing minds and bodies of all people.

“Our passion is to feed, nurture and grow communities through knowledge and nutrition, as we believe that no one can reach their full potential on an empty stomach,” explains Redinger.

The Southern Lodestar Breakfast Programme is the cornerstone of the work we do and platform to achieving our objectives.

Redinger founded the Dream Team within the foundation to identify and develop fellow Africans who can reach the top in their respective distances as runners.

Our Core Values

Our Slogan: Nourish our children

Mission statement:

Our mission is to eradicate hunger in vulnerable children in Southern Africa, by providing feeding and nutrition education programs to allow these children to thrive at school, and to inspire them to strive for personal and community development.

Vision:

Creating a brighter future for communities, through nourishing children.

Nourish

Nutrition is the cornerstone of a healthy life. Nourishment is key for any child to grow mentally and physically.

The Southern Lodestar Foundation provides a nutritious breakfast to children at selected schools and crèches throughout the country.

Educate

The Southern Lodestar Foundation dieticians have designed a training programme for caregivers and cooks in schools and crèches to help develop nutrition skills in our communities. Through our nutrition education programme, we share important nutritional and health messages, including healthy eating at different ages, menu planning and food safety.

We also enjoy sharing nutrition messages with children in fun and practical ways and we invite you to download and distribute our teaching materials available below.

Thrive

Nourishment and education are the foundations – both essential for an individual to grow and develop mentally and physically, and to build a successful life. However it also takes so much more than these basic essentials to support happy, full lives.

We are aware that there is always more that can be done at our partnering schools and early childhood development centres and we keep track of these needs.

With the help of volunteers and donations, the Southern Lodestar Foundation takes on as many of these other projects as we can.

Inspire

Individuals who are thriving lead by example and they are an inspiration to their communities. Through our programmes, we hope to inspire children to reach for their dreams and reach their full potential.
The Southern Lodestar Foundation’s DREAM TEAM of runners inspire our children by being great role models.
As an ultra-distance runner, Ryan Sandes, fellow board member and CEO of the Foundation, knows the true value of good nutrition. “In my game, you cannot get far without good nutrition. I have had a number of nutritional bonks during races and I know how debilitating that feels, so I can only imagine what these children go through on a daily basis not having access to food.”
“Through projects that focus on nutrition, nutritional education and inspiring children to be healthy and active, we hope to see the children of Southern Africa nourished, educated and inspired to change our country, and beautiful continent, for the better,” says Sandes.
